Abstract
"This paper tries to explore patients‘ attitudes in the informed consent situation. Quite often the step from understanding to decision (consent) is conceived in intellectualistic terms: the decision follows naturally, once the necessary information has become available and the patients make clear their values to themselves. In reality, the patients have to struggle to find an answer in a world full of medical uncertainties. Whatever decision they finally reach, there may be a dynamic process of receiving input and transforming it so it suits their own individual needs. This aspect will be called the gambling phase."
