Abstract
"O propósito deste ensaio é analisar a concepção de metafísica presente na obra de Kuhn, The Structure of the Scientific Revolutions, assim como o papel que desempenha na evolução histórica das ciências. Kuhn é bem claro quanto ao facto de que, sem metafísica, não pode haver ciência. Os paradigmas científicos incorporam sempre uma metafísica. Uma ciência não se torna ciência livrando-se da metafísica; pelo contrário, esta é a grande responsável por cada um dos paradigmas científicos ser aquilo que é. No entanto, a metafísica vigente num paradigma vale tanto quanto qualquer outra, o que implica que nenhuma delas é adoptada através da avaliação da conexão que estabelece com a realidade. De nada mais se pode falar a não ser de várias ‘realidades’ construídas pelas metafísicas adoptadas por cada um dos paradigmas. Neste ensaio, apontamos alguns dos problemas maiores da tese kuhniana da incomensurabilidade e do antirealismo que lhe é subjacente. Defendemos que incomensurabilidade e metafísica são conceitos incompatíveis, uma vez que entre metafísicas divergentes poderá sempre estabelecer-se uma comunicação racional e uma vez que, embora o sentido dos termos possa mudar de acordo com o paradigma, a referência é preservada. Propomos, por isso, o abandono da tese da incomensurabilidade e da concomitante noção de paradigma e a adopção da noção popperiana de ‘programas metafísicos de investigação’" ["The aim of this essay is to analyze the notion of metaphysics, as well as its role in the historical development of science, in Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Kuhn is quite clear that without metaphysics there can be no science. Scientific paradigms always incorporate a metaphysics. A science does not become a science by getting rid of metaphysics; on the opposite, metaphysics is largely responsible for the specific nature of each one of the scientific paradigms. However, a paradigm’s metaphysics is viewed as adequate as any other; this implies that none of them is adopted by evaluating its connection with reality. We can merely speak about different ‘realities’ constructed according to the adopted metaphysics of the paradigm. We point out some of the biggest problems of Kuhn's incommensurability thesis and the anti-realism that underlies it. We argue that incommensurability and metaphysics are incompatible concepts, since there is always place for rational communication between divergent metaphysical theories and since the reference is preserved, even though the meaning of the terms may change according to the paradigm. We propose, therefore, to abandon the incommensurability thesis and concomitant notion of paradigm and the adoption of Popper's notion of ‘metaphysical research programmes’"]
