Abstract
"Começo por agradecer o convite para participar na importante iniciativa de reflexão sobre «Demografia, Natalidade e Políticas Públicas», que reúne colegas peritos, nacionais e internacionais, sobre o assunto. O meu objectivo, nesta apresentação, é, com base em dados estatísticos também disponíveis na Pordata (www.pordata. pt), esboçar um breve retrato sobre as mudanças essenciais que marcaram e marcam decisivamente o panorama social em Portugal, colocando-me na perspectiva de quem nasce num país em que, como sabemos, o número de nados-vivos tem, nos anos mais recentes, sido menor do que o número de óbitos e onde nascer é cada vez mais raro" ["I start by thanking the invitation to participate in the important reflection initiative on "Demography, Natality and Public Policy", which brings together colleagues experts, national and international, on the subject. My goal in this presentation is based on statistical data also available in Pordata (www.pordata. pt), sketch a brief picture about the essential changes that have marked and decisively mark the social landscape in Portugal, putting myself in the perspective of those born in a country where, as we know, the number of live births has, in recent years , was lower than the number of deaths born and which is becoming rarer"]
