Abstract
"Creo que es en Lo cubano en la poesía, de Cintio Vitier, donde aparece por pri-mera vez (¿leyenda?, ¿presunción científica?) la imagen de Cuba surgiendo de las aguas del mar. Luego estará, como suave preámbulo, a las catastrofistas viñetas de Vista del amanecer en el trópico, de Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Y yo mismo, en uno de los poemas de El libro rojo, escribía sobre la isla donde ella misma está atrapada por las aguas del mar, como una Atlántida de bajo precio. Pero si esta isla vino a configurarse desde la mar, ¿somos lo que emergió, o apenas restos de lo hundido? Nueva Afrodita o Titanic avant la lettre, nuestro destino ha estado inquebrantablemente unido a ese “camino de la mar” por el cual, después, nos ha llegado todo lo que somos y, de algún modo, hemos venido todos los cubanos.
