Different from most pesantren in Indonesia, both pesantren still maintain the character of traditional pesantren by do not adoption of curriculum from government or modernization process as modern pesantren. At least, the author shows that Pesantren Langitan and Pesantren Ihyaul Ulum build the character education through two ways: first, learning process in understanding the Islamic values in Islamic classical literature or kitab kuning (yellow book).
