Since then, from age to age, Muslims try to understand the message and the will of God through the holy book (the Qur’an) and the practice of the Prophet’s life recorded in the Hadith. The Qur’an and Hadith are Arabic texts in dialogue with the tradition, culture and civilisation of the Arabs in their time. But they are also expected to explain and provide solutions for problems that occur today in societies with different traditions, cultures and civilisations that are always changing. One of the phenomena in society is “courtship”. I shall not justify this practice of interaction between men and women, known as “pacaran” in many cultures, including Indonesia, in the context of Islamic law. Instead, I shall examine the texts on the fundamental view of the interaction of men and women, taking “courtship” as a practice that is going on, and using the theory of interpretation of Jorge J.E. Gracia.
