Abstract
"O século XIX foi um período histórico marcado por grandes transformações sociopolíticas, geográficas, filosóficas e científicas oriundas, em grande parte, dos ideais pós-revolução do século XVIII e da ascensão da burguesia. A formação dos Estados-nação europeus e a dominação imperialista do mundo por nações como Inglaterra, França, Itália, Rússia e Estados Unidos da América, associadas à crescente racionalização da ciência e aos avanços tecnológicos sem precedentes, são características indeléveis dos Oitocentos. A visão mecanicista do mundo e a tentativa de explicar os fenômenos sociais por meio dos métodos estatísticos também são fatores inerentes ao pensamento científico do período. O positivismo e as ideias revolucionárias de Charles Robert Darwin e Alfred Russel Wallace são, igualmente, marcas do século que, transformando a sociedade e a economia, também influenciaram o modo de pensar da atualidade" ["The nineteenth century was a historical period marked with major sociopolitical, geographical, philosophical, and scientific changes that derived, mostly, of the post-revolutionary 18th-century ideals and the rise of the bourgeoisie. The consolidation of European Nation-States and the imperialism over the world promoted by nations such as England, France, Italy, Russia and the USA, associated with the growing scientific rationalization and technological advancements are indelible marks of the 1800s. The mechanistic view of the world elicited by Science, as well as the attempt to explain social phenomena with statistical methods are also inherent features of the period. The positivist thought and the revolutionary ideas spread by Charles Robert Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace are, likewise, traits of such a century that, by changing society and economy, also influenced the way we think currently"]
