Abstract
Imagine, for a moment, finding the levels of violence in US society impossible to accept. Imagine how you could change this. Imagine how you could change the society so that the major cause of death for the young was not violence. What strategies, exactly, might you recommend? With examples from her own experiences of the post-independence war in Mozambique, Carolyn Nordstrom points to the fact that what seems difficult to accomplish in peace time USA is exactly what Mozambicans did in the midst of one of the worst wars in our days. Unless innovative cultural solutions are created to “unteach” violence, the cultural system of violence will be reproduced in society, regardless of peace accords. The prognosis for the next 100 years is not bright, says the author. But culture can be radically reconstituted through the radical imaginary. Futures, once envisioned, can be created.
