Abstract
This article focuses on study of jenggotan (bearded) translation practiced in course of traditional pesantren in Java. This term of jenggotan or bearded translation is one of the local genius in pesantren tradition which is used to translate and understand the literal meaning of kitab kuning (yellow book) from Arabic language to Javanese language or local language in teaching and learning process. This study concludes that practice of jenggotan translation lays on two fundamental values. The first is all about the pesantren values and the second is intellectual-academic values.
