Abstract
"This document sits alongside the AASW Practice Standards as a clear statement by the professional association of the expectations of social workers regarding the knowledge, skills and values utilised in their roles and functions, as well as the requirements of ethically sound and accountable practice. The Mental Health Standards are much more than an aspirational statement. They are an important practical guide for social workers, those who use their services, and the broader community about they ways in which social work services are to be delivered. These standards are a definitive affirmation of the specific professional expertise that social workers bring to contemporary mental health practice, which has been rapidly evolving in recent years because of advances in policy, government funding initiatives, and research in to practice processes and outcomes. This progress has led to increased access, higher quality services and better outcomes for those seeking professional assistance to address mental health needs."
