Abstract
We are completing the first decade of the new millennium with no fewer challenges than 10 years ago, but with a continuous commitment to make the vision of sustainable development a reality everywhere. We believe that to make sustainability happen “fundamental changes are needed in our values, institutions, and ways of living.” That is the promise of the Earth Charter Initiative. For two decades, the vision of the Earth Charter has inspired numerous individuals and groups from all walks of life to undertake activities that have moved us towards sustainability. Nearly ten years ago, when the Earth Charter was first launched, after years of consultation and drafting, the vision was to have it widely disseminated, used and implemented as an instrument that contributes to the transition towards a new paradigm. Much has been accomplished and much is still to be achieved. The Earth Charter Initiative’s Mission and Vision is neither trivial nor easy to attain; it requires significant collaboration, perseverance, passion, and time, and this is what we have been exercising.
