进入20世纪以来，遗传学的飞速发展令人们在瞠目结舌之余茫然失措。到目前为止，几乎每一项基因工程新技术成果的应用，都咄咄逼向旧的生命伦理学理论和实践。每一次技术对伦理的挑战，都迫使科学家、法律学家、社会学家、医学家、媒体和公众紧急动员寻找对策，因为先进技术的不适当应用可能给人类和社会带来不好的结果。
