英国学者斯密（1723-1790）给后人留下了两个“谜”:一个谜是他自己提出来的，一般称为斯密的“价值之谜”，说的是钻石用处小而价格高，与水用处大而价格低的矛盾。这个谜的谜底，被19世纪70年代出现的边际学派给出，得到大家公认。本文所关注的是另一个谜，它是斯密去世后的19世纪中叶，由德国历史学派经济学家提出的， 一般称为“斯密之谜”、“斯密问题”、“斯密难题”、“斯密悖论”，说的是斯密两部著作即《国富论》与《道德情操论》的矛盾。这个谜的谜底，100多年来众说纷纭，未有定论。
