Abstract
Al-Syatibi (d. 790/1388) developed induction method in interpreting Qur’anic texts based on the principle of maqasid al-syari’ah (the objectives of laws). According to him, the Qur’anic texts should be examined deeply by observing the presumptive (zanni) texts that have same contents within them. Theref ore, the presumptive texts then could be considered definitive (qat’i) when they are read collectively. The induction method used by al-Syatibi based on many legal evidences: Qur’an, Hadith, ijma’ (consensus), qiyas (analogy) and other contextual evidences (qara‘in al-ahwal) that are combined to classify a subject. For example, the certainty of obligatory prayers (salat) is not merely indicated by Qur’anic verses, but i t should be together with other evidences that collaborate to support the nderstanding of obligatory nature of God’s command to prayers. The other evidences could be Qur’anic verses about God’s praise to someone doingprayers and His censure for the one leaving them. It is the togetherness of evidences that produce a certainty for us that the prayers are obliged.
