Abstract
This article studies about Fazlur Rahman’s thought on Sunnah and Hadith. Fazlur Rahman felt the anxiety about the condition of Muslims in the present that tended to shut the door of ijtihad, which ultimately resulted in an extraordinary intellectual stagnation and made Islam no longer responsive to the times. Rahman also explained that understanding the Sunnah has undergone a shift. Sunnah is defined by Rahman as an ideal thing that would precisely be emulated by generations of Muslims in the past, by interpreting the examples of the Prophet based on their new needs and new material. The continuous and progressive interpretation, although different for different regions, can be also referred to as the Sunnah. Thus, the Sunnah in the sense that the past was a practice that can be mutually agreed and called the living tradition as embodied in the consensus (Ijma’) of the Muslims and also the ijtihad of the scholars in their daily activities.
