"Envelhecer ou adoecer gravemente são experiências que aproximam do indivíduo e dos outros a realidade da separação final e da morte. O envelhecimento e a enfermidade forçam a pessoa nessas condições e os outros a se envolverem mais seriamente com a realidade da morte. Questões sobre como devemos envelhecer ou lidar com doenças graves inevitavelmente nos levam a questões sobre como devemos morrer. Enxergar os limites da vida no envelhecimento ou na doença grave de alguém, ou mesmo no envelhecimento e enfermidade de entes queridos, cria dúvidas e insegurança.
