Abstract
"How are we to understand the authority of the Bible in our world today? This essay reviews the steps from a first moment when what was important was the word of God to Moses, the prophets and wise men, and the apostles, through another step when attention was given to the books because they preserved these words, to another when the books were recognized for their importance in liturgy and instruction, to our time. Today when we face enormous challenges that threaten to end the human experiment, we reach a point where the main value of these books is the Word of the Living God that authorizes us to resist the demonic powers and to create new social structures that will provide for life."
