"1. Os saludo muy cordialmente a todos vosotros, participantes en el congreso internacional sobre «Tratamientos de mantenimiento vital y estado vegetativo: avances científicos y dilemas éticos». Deseo dirigir un saludo, en particular, a monseñor Elio Sgreccia, vicepresidente de la Academia pontificia para la vida, y al profesor Gian Luigi Gigli, presidente de la Federación internacional de asociaciones de médicos católicos y generoso defensor del valor fundamental de la vida, el cual se ha hecho amablemente intérprete de los sentimientos comunes. Este importante congreso, organizado conjuntamente por la Academia pontificia para la vida y la Federación internacional de asociaciones de médicos católicos, está afrontando un tema de gran importancia: la condición clínica denominada «estado vegetativo»".
