Abstract
"Os cuidados paliativos são fundamentais para a qualidade de vida dos portadores de doença sem possibilidade de cura. O objetivo foi analisar o conhecimento e a conduta dos acadêmicos de um curso de graduação em Medicina sobre cuidados paliativos utilizados em pacientes oncológicos que se encontram em fase terminal de vida. Participaram da pesquisa 266 (88,6%) acadêmicos distribuídos nas doze fases do curso. Um questionário composto por questões sociodemográficas e questões objetivas foi aplicado para avaliar se os acadêmicos tinham conhecimento sobre o significado da expressão “cuidados paliativos”, se saberiam identificar os casos em que estariam indicados o tratamento paliativo de suporte sem quimioterapia, se conheciam a diferença entre um tratamento paliativo com quimioterapia e sem quimioterapia, além da escala de performance status. Os termos “cuidados paliativos” eram conhecidos por 73,3% dos entrevistados, e o grau de conhecimento dos termos evoluiu ao longo do curso, passando de 26,9% nas primeiras três fases do curso, para 98,2% nas três últimas fases (p < 0,0001). Contudo, 29,7% demonstraram não estar preparados para lidar com os cuidados terminais e com a morte e com o luto dos familiares, nem mesmo aqueles que estavam no final do curso (30,4%). Em conclusão, a pesquisa mostrou que os acadêmicos adquiriram progressivamente conhecimentos sobre o significado dos termos “cuidados paliativos” ao longo do curso. No entanto, mesmo cursando as últimas fases, parte dos acadêmicos informou desconhecer as indicações dos cuidados paliativos e sentir-se despreparada para lidar com a morte do paciente e luto dos familiares" ["Palliative care is essential for the quality of life of patients with disease without possibility of cure. The objective of this study was to analyze the knowledge and behavior of students from a Medicine undergraduate course regarding palliative care used in oncologic patients in the terminal phase of life. 266 (88.6%) students distributed in the twelve stages of the course were part of the research. A questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic and objective questions was applied. It evaluated whether the students knew the meaning of the term “palliative care”, if they were able to identify cases in which the palliative care without chemotherapy would be the indicated treatment, if they knew the difference between a palliative care with or without chemotherapy, and if they knew the scale of performance status. The term “palliative care” was known by 73.3% of respondents and the level of knowledge rose from 26.9%, in the first three stages of the course, to 98.2% in the three last stages (p < 0.0001). However, 29.7% of the students showed not to be prepared to deal with terminal care and death of oncologic patients, as well as with the grieving period of the family. Not even those who were at the end of the course (30.4%) were prepared. In conclusion, this study showed that the studied students of the Medicine school progressively gained knowledge regarding the meaning of the term “palliative care” during the course. However, part of the students attending the last stage of the course reported ignoring the indications of palliative care and felt unprepared to deal with the death of the patient and the grieving family"]
