Abstract
"A propósito de la reciente aparición del libro Desafíos de la problemática racial en Cuba,1 Caminos le hizo llegar unas preguntas a su autor, Esteban Morales, quien tuvo la gentileza de responderlas para este dosier. ¿Cuál es la tesis fundamental de tu libro? La tesis se recoge en los tres objetivos fundamentales planteados en el libro, que aparecen en las páginas 42 y 43. Paso a comentarla. Vista desde una perspectiva socioeconómica de análisis, que es el plano metodológico principal en que el libro se desenvuelve, aunque no el único, la sociedad cubana de hoy lleva implícitos lastres de la sociedad colonial y republicana, racista y discriminatoria, de la cual, a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo xix, emergió una cultura racista. Pero la existencia del problema de la discriminación racial en la sociedad cubana actual no se explica solo a partir de esos lastres, sino también por la capacidad de la sociedad de hoy para reproducir el racismo y la discriminación racial, a partir de mecanismos generados o conservados que retroalimentan una fuerte reproducción de los prejuicios y estereotipos raciales negativos. La crisis económica –con fuertes señales de crisis social– de finales de los años ochenta y principios de los noventa sacó el tema a flote con la virulencia propia de un problema que, aun dado como resuelto un día, realmente no lo estaba. Fue un verdadero idealismo imaginar que el racismo y la discriminación habían desaparecido, o que al menos desaparecían a un ritmo rápido" ["Referring to the recent appearance of the book challenges the racial problem in Cuba, one Caminos sent him some questions to its author, Esteban Morales, who was kind enough to answer for this dossier. But the existence of the problem of racial discrimination in Cuban society can not be explained only from the burdens, but also by the ability of today's society to reproduce racism and racial discrimination, from mechanisms generated or preserved which feed a strong play of prejudices and negative racial stereotypes. The economic crisis, with strong signs of social crisis of the late eighties and early nineties brought the subject itself afloat with the virulence of a problem that even led solved one day, really was not. It was a real idealism imagine that racism and discrimination were gone, or at least disappearing at a rapid rate"]
