Abstract
"At the beginning of the twentieth century Roman Catholicism was considered — by friends and foes alike — to be ‘semper eadem’ (forever the same): the Roman Catholic church had never changed and could never change. This, of course, was a simplification: the Roman Catholic church has been undergoing development throughout the centuries of its existence, and some of its greatest thinkers have endeavoured to explain how ‘the development of Christian doctrine’ {cf the title ofJ. H. Newman’s book, 1845) has taken place, and how the church in its changing historic appearances has always been ‘the continuing incarnation of Christ’ (J. A. Moehler, 1835), and so has been able to keep its identity intact."
