Abstract
The concept of a global ethic(Weltethos/ Global Ethic)and related ideas originated from the book Global Responsibility(Projekt Weltethos,1990),by the Germany theologian,Hans Kung (b. 1928). The contemporary Global Ethic movement came about in 1993 through this book and the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions. The conference passed The Declaration of a Global Ethic, which became the movement's core spiritual principle. The movement seeks to identify basic universal elements that can serve as a basis for cultural and interreligious dialogue,as well as a means of viewing the world's cultural and religious traditions on an equal and objective basis. In this way,we may construct a basic ethic of responsibility,a conscious commitment to the future of the human race. This article briefly describes the temporal and spiritual context for the concept of a universal ethic, and provides a basic understanding of the “world" and “ethics"(Ethos)from a cross-cultural perspective.
