Abstract
This paper aims to outline the process of building characters of Binongko maritime sailors through the cruise. The source of data is the result of field research (qualitative descriptive) through in-depth interviews and participant observation and study of literature. The results show that the process of building character of Binongko maritime sailors does not happen instantaneously, but it happens in a long process and through direct experience in the voyage. Not surprisingly, Susanto Zuhdi (2010: 181) said that the true character of Buton maritime came from Binongko. For Binongko sailors, the boat is a means of making life as well as a place to live, while the sailing is the activity of searching for life. As a means of making life Binongko sailors will continue to sail, move the boat to follow every movement of the wind; whereas as a place to live, the boat will be in place as their home, especially during the sail. In the perspective of education, sail activities have become a vehicle for building the characters of Binongko maritime sailors. During the time of sailing, Binongko sailors have played a role as learners at the same time educators in shaping the character, the boat is a means of learning, ocean space is a space of learning, while the interaction in the boat is a learning activity. These processes build twelve characters of Binongko maritime sailors, namely; resilient, tough and unyielding, simple, honest, creative, communicative, intelligent, dynamic, risk-taking, adventurous, egalitarian, and responsible.
