Abstract
This article discusses about the way to study Qur’an verses on violence and the interpretation methodology applied to understanding that verses. The author shows that there are, in the Al-Quran, some verses which are usually as a basic source for violence and terror such as al-Ahzab [33]: 36, al-Taubah [9]: 5 and 29, and Al-Anfal [8]: 61. With literal understanding, these verses usually are used by Islamic fundamentalism movement as a basic source on violence. Historically, Islamic fundamentalism has appeared since Khalifah Ali period. In modern time, the author states that the term fundamentalism in religious tradition began from Christianity in America. The author offers the methodology to understand these verses by using the historical context (Asbab al-Nuzul) and correlation with the other verses (munasabah).
