Abstract
The Chinese understanding of Heavenly Dao reveals a dynamic metaphysical principle that supports all things and human lives. This differs sharply from the Western Church tradition since St.Augustine that presupposes a static Platonic idea of eternity. It appears that the development of a dynamic view of eternity in Daoism is made possible by Dao's implied quasi-personhood.Thus, if we are to rethink the idea of eternity, we shall find that the Cappadocian Fathers of the Eastern Church, who consider the communion of persons as the foundation of life, have provided a suitable framework for exploration. The discussion of dynamic eternity requires the affirmation of thecommunion of persons within theTrinity. It is the unfathomable depth of this communion in its vertical dimension that guarantees openness in intra-Trinitarian interpersonal relating not be threatened by contingency.
