Abstract
"Com o presente trabalho, realizado no âmbito do Centro de Investigação em Educação, da Universidade do Minho, pretendemos refletir sobre as implicações éticas da investigação em células estaminais humanas. A investigação em células estaminais tem sido de extrema importância pois permite quer conhecer os processos de desenvolvimento dos organismos, quer encontrar formas de tratamento de doenças irreversíveis. Considera-se que as células estaminais dos tecidos adultos possuem menor capacidade de diferenciação do que as embrionárias, consequentemente a sua utilização no tratamento de doenças é menos eficaz. Se a utilização de células estaminais dos tecidos adultos humanos normalmente não levanta questões éticas, o mesmo não acontece com a utilização de células estaminais embrionárias. A utilização deste tipo de células tem levantado muitas questões no âmbito da bioética, na medida em que, geralmente, acarreta a destruição de embriões humanos. O presente artigo encontra-se dividido em três partes: na primeira é feita uma breve análise sobre o conhecimento científico relativo às células estaminais; na segunda é abordado o estatuto do embrião e a regulação jurídica relativa à utilização de embriões na investigação científica (em Portugal e na Comunidade Europeia) e; na última parte são levantadas algumas questões éticas inerentes à utilização de células estaminais embrionárias" ["Through the present study, conducted within the scope of the Centro de Investigação em Educação da Universidade do Minho, our intention was to reflect on the ethical implications of investigations using human stem cells. Stem cell investigations are enormously important because they make it possible both to find out about the developmental processes of organisms and to find ways of treating irreversible diseases. It is believed that stem cells from adult tissues present lower capacity for differentiation than do embryonic cells, and consequently their use in disease treatment is less effective. While using stem cells from adult human tissue generally does not raise ethical issues, the same cannot be said for using embryonic stem cells. Use of this type of cell has raised many questions within the sphere of bioethics, in that it usually causes destruction of human embryos. The present article is divided into three parts: in the first part, a brief analysis on the scientific knowledge relating to stem cells is made; in the second part, the law on embryos and the legal regulations relating to use of embryos in scientific investigations are covered (in Portugal and the European Community); and in the final part, some ethical questions inherent to using embryonic stem cells are raised"]
