Abstract
Poor working conditions are common problem in the clothing industry. Some companies address this problem by setting social and environmental standards for their suppliers. Seven case studies of Moroccan clothing producers reflect on the challenges resulting from such standards for the supplier. Standard compliance is only profitable when contracts with companies can be secured that pay a premium prices. Otherwise a strategy of selective or noncompliance can secure the financial survival of the firm. Compliant firms also have to compete against companies that successfully deceive auditors – a practice that is reported to become more sophisticated and systematically implemented by some companies. The aim of the paper is to explain the causes and to point out the consequences of low standards, noncompliance and deception in the clothing industry.
