Abstract
"El desarrollo de tecnologías para el uso en la agricultura siempre se ha relacionado con el desarrollo de las sociedades humanas. El nacimiento de las sociedades neolíticas fue posible debido a la domesticación de plantas y animales que permite la producción de alimentos y otros productos de cultivo. Durante siglos XIX y XX la aplicación de una serie de las tecnologías agronómicas, incluyendo la genética, ha permitido que la producción de alimentos ha aumentado a un ritmo mayor que el crecimiento de la población humana. Las nuevas tecnologías se están aplicando en la agricultura y algunos de ellos, tales como el uso de plantas modificadas genéticamente, han producido importantes preocupaciones sociales, especialmente en Europa. El análisis ético de la utilización de las nuevas tecnologías en la agricultura ha sido objeto de diferentes estudios que incluyen un dictamen del Grupo Europeo de Ética en Ciencia y Nuevas Tecnologías. Las conclusiones de estos informes coinciden en la importancia de la agricultura para asegurar el acceso a los alimentos a las poblaciones humanas. Esto ha sido reconocido, en particular, en los objetivos del milenio de las Naciones Unidos. De esta manera se ha propuesto que las prioridades de las nuevas tecnologías tienen que ser la producción de alimentos suficientes para toda la población humana que tiene que ser seguro y saludable. Sin embargo, los efectos de la agricultura sobre el medio ambiente son bien conocidos y que podrían poner en peligro el acceso a los alimentos para las generaciones futuras. De esta manera la sostenibilidad de las prácticas agrícolas es otro argumento ético importante. Siguiendo estas ideas el uso de plantas modificadas genéticamente o la aplicación de los biocombustibles puede ser discutido" ["The development of technologies for the use in agriculture has always been linked to the development of human societies. The birth of Neolithic societies was possible due to the domestication of plants and animals that allow the production of food and other products from cultivation. During xixth and xxth centuries the application of a number of agronomic technologies, including Genetics, has allowed that the production of food has increased at a higher rate than the growth of human population. New technologies are now being applied in agriculture and some of them, such as the use of genetically modified plants, have produced important social concerns, especially in Europe. The ethical analysis of the use of new technologies in agriculture has been the object of different studies including an opinion of the European Group of Ethics on Science and New Technologies. The conclusions of these reports agree in the importance of agriculture to secure the access to food to human populations. That has been recognised, in particular, in the Millenium goals of the Unites Nations. In this way it has been proposed that the priorities of new technologies have to be the production of enough food for the whole human population that has to be safe and healthy. However the effects of agriculture on environment are well known and they could put in danger the access to food to future generations. In this way the sustainability of agricultural practices is another important ethical argument. Following these ideas the use of genetically modified plants or the application of biofuels can be discussed"]
