Abstract
This article studies the regulation issued by Lhokseumawe Mayor who banned the women from straddling while sitting on motorcycle, regarding it as against the Islamic law. This regulation has sparked strong criticism not only from activist but also from pluralist, both inside and outside the Aceh province alike. For some of them, this regulation is considered as backward step and for others this is as a form of discrimination against women’s right. One key to understand this problem is by looking at the Acehnese identity and culture which constitute the aspects of anthropology. The writer concludes that such law is neither the best way to protect the women nor the Islamic solution, but an ancient culture to be popularized by the Mayor to direct the attention of the Lhokseumawe people as if he has fulfilled their interest. By introducing this regulation, he seems to protect morality and behavior, but at the same time he has discriminated his own people.
