Abstract
The paper explores the condition of the Indonesian Islamic society, especially before the era of 1950. It is said that Muslim's poor perfomance of intelegentia, was caused not only by the idea of traditionalism and theologically oriented Islamic educational system, but also the deliberate policy of the Dutch colonial to leave the indigenous population as a whole backward and illiterate. Religion, than seen as the potential medium providing education for the people
