Abstract
This writing discusses about the role of education as a basic instrument to maintain Indonesian cultures and local wisdoms. In colonial period, Ki Hajar Dewantoto built Taman Siswa school to protect Indonesian students from infiltration of western cultures and as educational institution that is suitable with Indonesian cultures and civilization. In this regard, Dewantoro said that there are three important places of education i.e school, home, and youth education. Dewantoro stated that one of the characteristics of Indonesian cultures is communalism (gotong royomg) that opposite with western cultures such as individual and liberal. With these Dewantoro’s concepts, the author states that Indonesia still exist with local wisdom
