Abstract
"Why is it that the question of responsibility – as old as the human race – has re-emerged as a key question in today’s world? Are the ongoing and widespread environmental, economic, political, and social problems in the world forcing us to pay more attention to it? These problems are certainly raising questions about the role of governments, businesses, and citizens, major players on the world scene.. How are these players actually responding to the major societal challenges humanity is facing? Are there particular constraints preventing them from doing more? And if so, to what extent can these be alleviated, if not eliminated entirely? This book is founded on the observation that governments, businesses, and citizens are falling short in adequately addressing the major issues of our time, and in some instances, are even exacerbating the situation, particularly in regards to the current state of the biosphere. This study primarily seeks to identify if the societal responsibility of governments, businesses, and citizens can be improved, and if so, how this can be achieved. As well as research into literature, interviews with individuals around the world have been instrumental in providing answers to these questions. People from twelve different professional networks grappling with the issue of societal responsibility analyse how this concept could be incorporated into their respective contexts. This exploratory study does not intend to provide final answers. It is rather a contribution to the efforts that so many others are already making in the goal of finding a better way to live together on our planet."
