Abstract
"The German Bishops' Conference (Deutsche Bischofskonferenz) and the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland - EKD) decided in 1986 to appoint a working party to prepare a statement on the protection of life, in the way that had been followed with previous joint declarations. The horizon of the subjects to be dealt with was deliberately a wide one, particularly as differences between the catholic and the protestant side on the question of an effective protection of prenatal life could not be overlooked. Dealing with the questions comprehensively and at depth also promised more common ground. The working party began its work in the spring of 1987 and laid the results of its deliberations before the leading organs of the two churches in the summer of 1989."
