Abstract
With the emergence of several new Chinese translations of the Bible at the turn of the millennium, the need arises for a theoretical apparatus either to assess the quality of these translations or to describe, analyze and position them in relation to other Chinese versions. However, despite the rapid advances and growing interdisciplinarity in translation studies over recent decades, the Chinese Bible translation undertaken by various agents and critics seldom incorporates the perspectives of translation theorists, not to mention the presuppositions, applicability and implications of the leading concepts in contemporary translation research. This article explores both the role of contemporary translation theory in Chinese Bible translation and the possibility of a “with-theory scenario” to meet the challenges posed by the new translations.
