Abstract
From September 18-21, 2014, the 10th “Theology and the Humanities” Summer Institute was held at Yanbian University, Jilin Province. The theme of this Summer Institute was “Comparative Literature and Religious Studies,” since the meeting was held in conjunction with the 11th Triennial Congress of the Chinese Comparative Literature Association. More than twenty academics from US, UK, Hong Kong and mainland Chinese universities were invited to present papers at the Summer Institute meeting. Under the framework of “comparative studies”, interdisciplinary explorations and discussions covered a wide range of areas, from translation and hermerneutics, to comparative studies on classics, Biblical literature, western literature, Sino-Christian theology and religious studies. This review summarizes the major concerns and issues raised during the meeting. Across the spectrum of papers, we can see clearly how comparative literature, sinology and religious studies share common research ground in the field of comparative studies. The Summer Institute demonstrated how inter-cultural and inter-disciplinary studies in China and beyond may fruitfully draw on and appropriate a comparative language and perspective.
