Abstract
As a promoter and designer of the Second Vatican Council, Congar has greatly influenced contemporary Catholicism. Through the study of Congar’s thought of tradition (Tradition and traditions), this article try to explore Congar’s main theory about dialogue and ecumenism, and his idea about how to carry out dialogue between Catholic and Protestant. This article consists of four parts. The first part is a brief introduction to Congar’s ecclesiology. The second part takes Lutheranism as an example and aims to present Congar’s understanding of Protestant tradition and characteristics. This understanding becomes part of Congar’s dialogue and ecumenical practice. The third part provides further discussion about the meaning of tradition to belief and compares the different attitudes of Catholic and Protestant theologians toward Bible and tradition. In conclusion, Congar constructed his theory about Tradition and traditions to facilitate inter-denominational understanding and dialogue.
