"Este trabalho apresenta as categorias comumente utilizadas para definir o processo de envelhecimento e os segmentos populacionais que o vivenciam, estabelecendo uma discussão sobre suas conseqüências, seja o que concerne a seu impacto em termos populacionais, a sua importância na alocação de recursos para a saúde e na dimensão individual, apontando alguns dos impasses ao atendimento de pacientes nessa faixa etária" ["This work presents the categories commonly used to define the process of growing old and the population groups that experience it, establishing a discussion about its consequences, concerning its impact in the population, its importance to the allocation of health resources and in its individual dimension, pointing out some of the impasses to the care of patients at that age"]
