Abstract
This paper tries to discuss the growing initiatives within the young Muslim in Yogyakarta to organize social welfare activities, and analyzes the way in which zakat and sedekah are practiced among them. This paper focuses on two Islamic philanthropy organization’s i.e Laskar Sedekah (LS) and Yayasan Senyum Kita (YSK). The author states that the establishment of independent alms agencies within young Muslim which are not afiliated to Islamic organization, government or corporation have become new players in the rapid growth of the Islamic philanthropy in the Reformasi era. This paper examines the following issues: what are the main forces stimulating young Muslim in Yogyakarta to set up philanthropic organization; what kinds of religious ideas are applied to mobilize charities from Muslim society; and how these concepts are interpreted and practiced in Laskar Sedekah and Yayasan Senyum Kita as alms collectors? This paper argues that the new trends of Islamic philanthropy organizations in Yogyakarta has indicated the dynamics of Islamic discourse in Indonesia especially to counter the flourish of Islamic fundamentalism. Beside that, the author states that new media such as Facebook, Blog, Web, etc. has pivotal tool to maintain the autonomous of these organizations both from the state and religious organizations.
