Abstract
"No centro da conferência inaugural do Prof. Braga da Cruz assim como do Dr. Jorge Lacão esteve a relação da bioética com a cidadania. Para o primeiro orador, não há educação para a bioética sem uma relação estreita com a cidadania, tal como, reciprocamente, não há educação para a cidadania sem relação com a bioética. Esta tese apoiou-se na análise da progressão da história recente em relação aos direitos adquiridos. Aprimeira fase da luta pelos direitos incidiu na liberdade; em seguida, nos direitos de participação cívica e política (1925). A terceira fase dos objectivos abriuse quando no centro das atenções esteve a solidariedade social, a qual se compreende somente no pano de fundo das nacionalidades e na afirmação das identidades nacionais. A nossa época, contudo, caracteriza-se por uma quarta fase, que implica o alargamento do Estado-Nação e a introdução dos direitos da quarta geração, direitos da qualidade da vida e do ambiente.
