Abstract
Indonesia as part of the ASEAN countries is now faced with the Asean Economic Community (AEC) which is a program of the establishment of the free trade system. In 2020 the AEC has a vision to establish the ASEAN into a based-single production market in order to reduce inequality and poverty, both social and economic sphere. One alternative for reducing this inequality is to produce workers with capable skills. Among the efforts to deliver competent workforce is through science and technology (IPTEK), as one of the field that have good performance to boost economic development in Indonesia. The most appropriate subject to develop the competence in science and technology is youth. Because youth are the most viable people to be developed to have a competence skills. One way to make the youth aware of IPTEK is to educate them in vocational education (VE). This vocational education promises young Indonesian skilled towards science and technology, so as to overcome economic problems and avoid the image of unemployment. Learning in vocational education focuses on five key competencies, namely the needs of the society (societal needs), the needs of the world of work (industrial needs), professional needs (professional needs), needs of future generations (vision), and the needs of science (scientific). Through the VE program, Indonesian youth could have the capability to compete with other ASEAN countries.
