Abstract
In the early 20th century Russian Ecclesiastical mission in Beijing has been actively engaged in preachingg among the Chinese population. It was an incentive to pay attention to culture and religion of China. In 1904 was established the journal of the Mission in China under the title “Izvestiya Bratsva pravoslavnoj tserkvi v Kitae” (News of the Brotherhood of the Orthodox Church in China) in 1907 it was renamed as “Kitajskij blagovestnik” (Chinese Good News). This periodical reflected the views of the Russian missionaries on cultural traditions, religious ceremonies and daily customs of the Chinese. On the basis of primary sources this article focuses on missionaries evaluation of Chinese culture and religious life different interpretations of the prospects for propagation of Christianity in China at the backdrop of modernization of society and revolutionary change in politics attempts to adapt the Orthodox message and organisation to the specifics of Chinese society. The period is limited by the year 1917 because after the revolution in Russia the Mission had to abandon preaching among the Chinese.
