Abstract
The idea of tajdid and the emergence of mujaddid every one century as mentioned in one Prophet's Hadith is one of the schools adopted widespread, including Islamic society in India. One of which is seen as mujadid in the second is Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi. According to most thinkers, if not all, the works on Sirhindi, the tajdid movement was mainly caused by Indian religious practices which are seen far from the actual teachings of Islam; the local communities are often seen engaging in these heretical and superstition practices and even doing something that would tend destroy Islam. All practices grow fastly, especially since Akbar rise to the throne of Mughal Empire, leading to the views that Akbar has come out of Islam. Interestingly, the following paper questions the thesis that entrenched it. By investigating the historical data associated with religious life of Akbar and Sirhindi, the author of the paper come to the conclusion that the thesis is not acceptable, at least still require further research. To support his thesis, the author showed that the difference between Akbar on one side and Sirhindi on the othr side are caused by the more elite opposition which is political oriented and not religious problems or conflicts between the views of non-Muslim (Akbar) and Muslim (Sirhindi) but rather between an understanding and another understanding of Islamic teachings. The result of the following article is serious: the claim that Sirhindi is mujaddid on the second milinium is less supported by historical data that can be accepted by most thinkers, if not all historians.
