Abstract
"O artigo objetiva mostrar a atualidade do caminho traçado pelas intuições iniciais de Van Rensselaer Potter acerca da necessidade de ultrapassar as antigas dicotomias disciplinares – a começar por aquela entre as duas culturas representadas pelas ciências e as humanidades – para poder alcançar uma ciência da sobrevivência, representada pela Bioética. Para tanto, propõe-se uma breve genealogia da Bioética a partir da etapa inicial, representada pela imagem “ponte” a ser estabelecida entre as duas culturas até chegar à problemática atual da inter-relação e da globalização dos problemas, inclusive de tipo moral. De fato, muitas das indicações iniciais do autor serão elaboradas posteriormente, apesar de uma inicial convergência da maioria dos bioeticistas sobre o modelo padrão representado pelo principialismo. Dentre tais intuições, destacam-se a preocupação com a interdisciplinaridade, considerada necessária para poder estabelecer um diálogo constante entre o campo das ciências da vida (amplamente entendidas) e as ciências humanas (a começar pela filosofia moral), e a indicação da complexidade do novo campo de saber, em contínua transformação graças à incorporação de novos territórios, como aqueles do trato com animais e o ambiente, mas também aquele representado pelas interfaces entre o uso e abuso de novas tecnologias, e as novas formas assumidas pela moralidade na contemporaneidade" ["The aim of this article is to show how much beyond his own time was the way traced by the initial intuitions of Van Rensselaer Potter concerning the necessity to go beyond the old disciplinary dichotomies – starting with that relating two cultures represented by the sciences and the humanities – to be able to reach a science of survival represented by Bioethics. For doing this, a brief genealogy of Bioethics since its initial stage is presented, as characterized by the image of bioethics as a “bridge” to be established between these two cultures until arriving at the current set of problems linked to the interrelationship among problems and their globalization, including some moral questions. As a matter of fact, many of the first suggestions of the author would be elaborated later, although there was an initial convergence of most bioethicists on the standard model represented by principlism. Amongst such intuitions, there is a deep emphasis on concern about interdisciplinarity, considered necessary for professionals to be able to establish a constant dialogue between the fields of life sciences (in a broader understanding) and the human sciences (first of all moral philosophy), and the indication of the complexity of the new field of knowledge, in a permanent transformation thanks to the incorporation of new territories, as those of humans relationships with animals and the environment, but also that represented by the interfaces between the use and abuse of new technologies, and the new forms assumed by morality in the contemporary world"]
