Abstract
Hannah Arendt develops basic categories to give meaning to human life, particularly natality, action, plurality and the conception of morality. The capacity for action, which has its origin in natality and the social construction of the human being, in turn guarantees human fulfillment. The violation and non-realization of human fulfillment not only endangers society, but human nature itself. It also generates deep feelings of frustration, particularly when our freedom faces restrictions that are developed within the framework of the protection of the public good. Such is the case of public health. We propose to analyze under an Arendtian conception of bioethics, the main health actions that the authorities have implemented to address covid-19. This implies analyzing their relevance from the perspective of understanding the human condition, i.e. “understanding” as a central concept in HannahArendt’s philosophy. In this context, we seek to go beyond the traditional concept of Arendt’s bioethics, rejecting, in part, that its basis is to be found only in the individual human condition. We then expose the central role of political action, judgment and imagination in building community. From this, we seek to help build the foundations of a new Arendtian bioethics in times of covid-19.
