Abstract
For Meister Eckhart (1260-1328), mysticism aims at the realization of the ongoing self-revelation of being, for which he uses the image of the ongoing birth of the son of God in the soul. This is compared with the distinction that is made in The Awakening of Faith Sutra between one‟s ever-present original enlightenment (benjue), and the process of actualizing or realizing that enlightenment (shijue). For such a mystical realization, the practice of “forgetting the self” is essential, in order to make room for the continual presencing of truth right before one‟s very eyes. For the advancement of the field of comparative mysticism, a dialogical approach is necessary. This paper serves as a case study of the role that Eckhart‟s “Asian Christianity” can play in the development of such a dialogue between Christian and Buddhist scriptures.
