Abstract
This article attempts to discuss the asceticism of Isa al-Masih based on the books of Al-Zuhd Wa’l-Raqā’iq by Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak and Al-Zuhd by Ibn Hanbal. The author states that the ascetic aspect of Isa al-Masih is the most popular model in strengthening the asceticism doctrines among tasawwuf experts in classical periods. Some of ascetic behaviors from Isa Al-Masih in both books are avoiding physical pleasures to always implement Allah’ commands and avoiding desire. Asceticism of Isa al-Masih was conformable to the concept of asceticism of the Sufi, which meant that has nothing and belongs to nothing (lā yamliku shaian walā yamlikuhu shaiun). Asceticism is not only merely spiritual position which is depicted in tasawuf, but asceticism in this context is the spiritual itself.
