Abstract
The growing in!uence of money in politics means political corruption remains a core governance problem around the world. It undermines public trust in the democratic process and damages individual lives. In countries where democratic institutions remain fragile, political corruption diverts resources from providing basic social services for millions of poor and underprivileged people. Such corruption is not limited to electoral fraud – it includes the growing in! uence of private rather than public interests in elections and the policy-making process.
