Abstract
This review aims to introduce to readers the outstanding collection based on a 2009 symposium at Boston College on interreligious hermeneutics. Collected by Catherine Cornille and Christopher Conway, this volume brings together eleven essays which explore from different perspectives the approaches and significance of interreligious hermeneutics. Generally speaking, all these eleven contributions fall under one of the four approaches listed by Catherine Cornille in the introductory part of the book: 1. the hermeneutical retrieval of resources for dialogue within one’s own tradition; 2. the pursuit of proper understanding of the other; 3. the appropriation and reinterpretation of the other within one’s own religious framework; and 4. the borrowing of hermeneutical principles of another religion. Actually, in the sense that this volume lacks voices from Eastern religious traditions, it cannot be viewed as a real “inter”-religious one. However, for researchers in this area, it indeed provides many valuable insights which would definitely benefit their further exploration in this topic.
