Abstract
The roundtable began with a warm welcome and an introduction by the host, Dennis de Jong, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Dutch Socialist Party. De Jong is one of the founders of a network of likeminded MEPS who are concerned about freedom and religion for all, believers or non-believers on an equal footing. One of the key issues this network seeks to study is whether governments can engage with religious leaders in order to promote this goal and if so, what are the limitations? The roundtable was convened by the European Council of Religious Leaders – Religions for Peace.1 Th e goal of this gathering was to answer the following questions: With whom should Europe engage to promote freedom of religion and belief? Is it at all useful to speak to religious leaders? What are the dilemmas of religious leaders at the moment? What is the relationship between religion and the state? How do religious minorities cope with the situation?
