Abstract
"The purpose of this document is to review progress and challenges in two areas of analysis: Gender Equity: the basis for a fair and equitable society, and Human Rights and Peace for Latin America and the Caribbean. This analysis is undertaken with a view to orienting the work of the eighth session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held in Lima from 8 to 10 February 2000.1 This document will seek to analyse progress and challenges in these two areas of the Regional Programme of Action for the Women of Latin America and the Caribbean, 1995-2001, two years on from the last session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean and five years on from the Fourth World Conference on Women, and to define the position to be taken by the region at the special session of the United Nations General Assembly, “Women in the year 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century”". ["El propósito de este documento es revisar los avances y desafíos en dos áreas de análisis : Equidad de género: la base de una sociedad justa y equitativa , y los Derechos Humanos y la Paz para América Latina y el Caribe. Este análisis se llevó a cabo con el fin de orientar los trabajos de la octava reunión de la Conferencia Regional sobre la Mujer de América Latina y el Caribe , que se celebrará en Lima del 8 al 10 febrero 2000.1 Este documento tratará de analizar los avances y desafíos en estas dos áreas del Programa de Acción Regional para las Mujeres de América Latina y el Caribe , 1995-2001 , a dos años después de la última reunión de la Conferencia Regional sobre la Mujer de América Latina y el Caribe y cinco años de la Cuarta Conferencia Mundial sobre la Mujer , y para definir la posición que debe adoptar la región en el período extraordinario de sesiones de la Asamblea general de las Naciones Unidas, "La mujer en el año 2000 : igualdad entre los géneros , desarrollo y paz para el siglo XXI "".]
